The Food Truck Ecosystem Map

Players

Past:

  • Fast food (i.e. McDonald's, Burger King, Arby's etc.)
  • Traditional BBQ stands
  • Prepackaged lunches at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and other grocery stores.
  • Upscale organic dining (i.e. Farm, Greenleaf Organics)

Present:

  • Houston Organics: Local grocery food truck serving prepackaged sandwiches.
  • Coop Collective Food Truck: A local co-op's version of the food truck. All co-op grown ingredients. Single-item lunch menu with daily delivery.
  • Tony's Famous Pizza Truck: Authentic Italian fare for a low cost. Our biggest Italian food truck competitor.

Future

  • As the food truck industry continues to grow, we will see further integrations and collaborations. In particular, here is what we expect.
    • The industry is heading towards more technology integrations to streamline the accessibility of food truck locations and add delivery options to the current business model.
    • As our local community continues to focus on growing organic ingredients, our farmer network is bound to grow as well.
    • With our founder Chef Tony Montana's network of top chefs, we also see partnerships with other local chefs, creating a larger ecosystem of fine-dining meets street food.

Related Brands

  • Houston Organics uses an online database to connect with local growers and source exactly the ingredients they need year-round. This could be an option to explore as we grow our current farmer network. We also appreciate Houston Organics' clean, simple branding. Keep this clean simplicity in mind for our marketing collateral.
  • Coop's mobile ordering option is also something to keep in mind. They have multiple trucks in designated areas throughout the city throughout the week. Online orderers can then choose which location they want to pick their order up from. This option is something to keep in mind as we develop our custom app.
  • Tony's Pizza Truck doesn't pride itself on organic ingredients like The Tomato Food Truck, but they are our main competitor in the Italian fast-food sector. They do a really good job at localizing their marketing to specific audiences. They have designated deals targeted at students, pick-up lunches while you work, and corporate catering. We should keep their targeting tactics in mind when packaging our value proposition of healthy, affordable Italian food.
